A WARNING TO CONFIDING CREDITORS.
A casual contributor to the Oamaru Times having suffered loss by the " skedaddling " of certain of his customers, has solaced himself by composing the following rhymes, which he styles "A small tribute to the cleverness of my departed friends."— In summer time, when work was slack, And very little doing, One pleasant day, says C. to Jack, " Let's go a cockatooing." They leased some land upon the Plain, On " very easy terms And wrote home to their anxious friends About their stock and farms. Alas! they only leased a team— They had not aught to lose; Though credit was not scarce 'twould seem. Were they not cockatoos ? The merchants down in Oamaru, Supplied what e'er they wanted; But when their " little bill" came due, The knowing pah- levanted. They scorned to pay the landlord's rent, They choused their tradesmen too; And, in a coach-and-four, they went Away from Oamaru. Their creditors may well bewail, Though none need break his heart— On board the steamer Airedale, They shipped as Young and Smart. As the practice of levanting is by no means confined to Oamaru, it is, perhaps, as well to give the moral of the song—" Be very careful to whom you give credit." A Richmond lady sent a silver urn to an auction to be sold. It was the last of her once great wealth. The people present, who knew her, made up a heavy purse, put it in the urn, arid sent it back to the owner. Pretty cbaritv, wasn't it. An Ohio paper says that the Female College, at College Hill, in that State, recently sent out a graduating class of fifteen young ladies, every one of whom was elegantly fitted to live on the fortune of some appreciative man alive to the advantages of female education.
