PROTECTIVE WORKS.
(To tlie Editor of the Westport Times.} Sir, O'Conor's speech, he there states " that the Provincial Engineer is so sure of the efficacy of the works that he rejects all suggestions to make it still more secure, relying upon the stone groin itself to do what is required." Time will show the wisdom or folly of works constructed contrary to nature's laws. A gigantic failure is predicted, and £I2OO more, uselessly thrown into the river. Why repeat the error of beginning at the wrong end ? Will two wrongs make one right ? Please, Mr Editor, to agitate the question, and let past experience be a caution, and, if possible, obtain the opinion of a practical Marine Engineer before too late. If £7OOO, as stated, is lost to the Province by pure ignorance and inefficiency, is not the incompetency likely to continue from the same source ? To me it seems inconsistent, but let our members see to this.—l am, Sir, yours, &c, A WAttNiJTG Voice. Westport, May 19.
