NELSON PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
SUPERINTENDENT ASSENTS TO AMENDED EXECUTIVE ORDINANCE. (57 ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (PROM OUR OWI CORRESPONDENT.) Nelson, Monday. After conference with deputation from Council, the Superintendent promised his assent to an amended Executive Ordinance, to be read the first time on Wednesday, and to consist of five—one outside the Council and four in the Council. All in Council removable except Secretary. On Priday, a series of resolutions carried denying right of Superintendent to accept any second resignation from Franklyn, asserting that first acceptance would have been in accordance with unimpeachable constitutional practice, and proposing that salaried ofiicers should cease to retain office either on candidature or election as Councillors.
(From the W. O. limes.) Dunedet, May 17. The G-eneral Government have sold the steamer St. Kilda to Freeman Jackson for the "Wanganui trade. Mr Collie met the Chamber of Commeree yesterday. It was resolved to support the new San Francisco line of steamers projected by Mr Collie, the port of call to be not further north than "Wellington. There is a strong
movement in Dunedin in favor of making Port Chalmers the port of call. At a meeting of the merchants last night, it was resolved to form a company to purchase the Taranaki and the New Zealand Company's plant. The capital is to be .£50,000, in five pound shares.
