RESIDENT MAGISTRATE COURT.
Friday, Mat 20. (Before J. Giles, Esq., R. M.) Jesse Erith appeared on remand, charged with attempted suicide. Accused stated that he had been stying pigs for Mr Sheahan on Sunday last, and in so doing had got wet and muddy to the knees, and had gone to the river to wash his trousers. His Worship, in dismissing the accused, stated that the evidence had not altogether shown an attempt on the part of the accused to commit suicide, but it had been shown that prisoner was in liquor, and that but for assistance he would have been carried away by the flood. He trusted the confinement prisoner had undergone would act as a sufficient caution. Turner v. Langmeyer.—Claim for £l, for four weeks rent of cottage situate in Avery Row. The sum of 15s was paid into court, and defendant pleaded not indebted as to the remainder. It appeared that defendant held the cottage under agreement that the occupancy should cease by a week's notice on either side. He stated that he had to leave the cottage in consequence of its being flooded by the sea, and under the circumstances considered that he was not called upon to give any notice. Judgment for plaintiff for 5s and costs, in addition to sum paid into court. M'Go wan v. Kemo.—Plaintiff had issued a summons calling upon defendant to show cause why he had not paid the sum of 10s, for which judgment had been previously given. His Worship ordered that the amount be paid in seven days, or in default one week's imprisonment.
