CHARLESTON.

A meeting of subscribers to the Charleston Library and Beading Boom Fund took place at the Melbourne Hotel on Wednesday evening, Charles Broad, Esquire, E. M. and Warden, in the chair. The chairman stated the object of the meeting to be the receiving of the report of the Provisional Cominictee, and the appointment of a Permanent Committee ; that the funds in hand amounted to about the sum of £75, and that he was prepared to hand over the sura of £BO, on receipt of a certificate from the bank, that the sum of £BO had been deposited to the credit of the Committee. The Bev. Mr Flavell stated that those gentlemen, who had kindly undertaken the collection of subscriptions, had met with very good success, every promise having been fulfilled, except by those persons who had, subsequent to their promise, left the district. A- proposition was then made to the meeting by Mr A. Doyle, and immediately seconded, and after a little, discussion, unanimously carried, that a public library alone be established. The meeting then proceeded to the nomination of persons to serve on the Permanent Committee, when 17 candidates were proposed, out of whom nine were elected as the Permanent Committee for the ensuing term, viz : Messrs Bowman, Macarthy, J. Gilmer, M'Coy, D. Henderson, M'Parland, H. Jones, Wilson, C. M'Carthy. The meeting then dispersed, after a vote of thanks to the Chairman.

The annual meeting of subscribers to the Charleston Hospital was held at the Melbourne Hotel on Thursday evening, Charles Broad, Esquire, E. M. and Warden, in the chair. The chairman briefly stated the purpose for which the meeting was called, and then called on the Hon. Secretary to read his report, from which it appeared that from the surgeon's report at the end of the present year, 3 patients remained, that 5S were admitted during the year 3 deaths had occurred, 50 patients had been discharged; that the total number of days under treatment had been 1,337, the average being 22-§- days, and that the number of patients remaining in the Hospital at the present time was 8. The receipts for the year had been as follows : Balance from last year ... £llß 17 0 Eeceived from Gov. ... 200 0 0 Public subscriptions ... 72 2 6 Maintenance of patients 50 17 8 Total ... £441 17 2 The total expenditure had been, for working expenses, salaries, printing, &c, ,£367 5s sd. Dr Bruen had been re-engaged for the sum of £250 per annum. After a slight discussion, it was determined that the meetings should take place monthly, instead of as heretofore. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
