THE THAMES GOLDFIELD.
A person who lately left this part of the for the Thames thus writes to a friend in Westport:— The diggings here are the worst that I have ever been on. Wages here are £2 a week—that is, if you can get it, for where there is one man wanted there are hundreds wanting. I have not seen one man who says he has made any money since he came here. In fact I can see nothing in the shape of money here except coppers or penny tokens. Things arc cheaper, but they would require to be so, else people would starve, and I fear there are many in that state at present. For my part I am working for a contractor, for £2 per week, wet weather deducted, and that is no small consideration. I will only have three weeks work whero I am at present, and I don't know where the next job will be, but if this "Upper Thames is not open after Christmas, I am off to some
other part of tho world. My opinion at present is the Upper Thames will prove to be a " sell." Allow no friend of yours to come here. If they do they will find out their mistake. Any man can get shares and scrip, but in too many instances they are valueless.
