The Westport Times. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1869.
We are glad to be able to state that Mr W. N. Franklyn has been returned at the head of the poll, and by a majority of fifty-five votes, as one of the members of the Provincial Council for the Grey District. We understand that a most determined opposition was manifested to Mr Franklyn's return by strong factions at Cobden and Greymouth, owing in the first place to Mr Franklyn's connection with Westport, and, secondly, in consequence of some disparaging remarks he made at the nomination as to the present aspect of affairs in the County of Westland. Perhaps some of the opposition was due also to the fact that Mr Franklyn was successful in preventing the nomination of Mr W. H. Harrison, on the ground that that gentleman's name was not on the electoral roll of the Province ; the Greymouth element having brought Mr Harrison forward, in the hope of his election as champion of either the annexation of the Grey Valley to Westland or of part of Westland. to Province. Mr Franklyn deserves to be congratulated on his evident popularity with the miners of the Nelson Goklfields. This is the more manifest in the present instance as the opposing candidates were all local men, and long residents of the Grey District, and it is a popularity which, we do not doubt, is thoroughly justified and will not be diminished by the electors' experience of Mr Franklyn as one of their representatives in the Provincial Council. The other member for the district is Mr Mackley, an early and well-known settler of the Grey Valley.
