Some interest was caused on Thursday morning by the appearance of the steamer Kennedy in the. roadstead, towing the steamer Beautiful Star. It was correctly surmised •that the Beautiful Star had "broken down," and on her arrival it was learnt that, when off Cape Farewell, her screw-shaft had broken. The Omeo was not far from her at the time, and, more fortunately, the Kennedy came in siyht, so that she was not only taken in tow, but was brought in over the bar. She was towed to the lagoon, where her propeller was removed, and she will sail, as soon as she is discharged, for Nelson or Wellington, under canvas. Meantime, her screw-shaft is to be sent to Melbourne, where the engineer will proceed to superintend the manufacture of another. When the Beautiful Star met with this accident, she had a freight of cattle and sheep on board, consigned to Messrs Dick and Sea ton, and, as there was only sufficient water and fodder on board for a short voyage, but for the timely passing of the Kennedy the loss might have been serious. When crossing Wanganui bar—or in the river—the Star struck a snag heavily. This probably had something to do with the origin of the accident. On the trip hither the Star called at Oamaru, Timaru, Akaroa, Lyttelton, Wellington, Nelson, and "Wanganui. Besides stock, she brought a general cargo —chiefly from Dunedin—and a few passengers.

The steamer Kennedy has returned to the Coast from Sydney, materially renovated and altered. She looks the better by being schooner-rigged, like the John Penn, her mizen having been removed and the other masts shifted. There are other changes above deck, which is itself raised, tier bulwarks have been heightened, and her bridge extended. Her hull has also been strengthened throughout, and many of her side plates have been removed. An overhaul to her engines and boilers, and a new b:>i!cr to tile latter are among the other work done, and altogether she lias been made a boat good for years to come, and in seme ivspects better than she ■was in years past. Capt. Whitwell still retrains in command, and prefers to do so to taking charge of the Charles Edward, which will probably continue under command ot Captain Holmes. BY ELKCTUIC TELHGRAPH. ARRIVALS.
