The steamers Murray and Waipara arrived iu port yesterday morning. After discharging quickly a quantity of coal" and other cargo the Murray sailed for Nelson, and the Waipara, during the same tide, returned to Greymouth. On the previous day she had merely called there, and did not discharge, but towed out (he Isabella, and proceeded on to Westport. She left Hokitika on Monday last for Okarito, and entered that port easily enough, but on coming out the channel was found to be very shallow, there being not more than four feet of water. The schooner Rambler, from Melbourne, had got ashore when attempting to enter, and an inquiry had been held, at which Captain Bascand acted as Nautical Assessor. The vessel missed stays, and went ashore on the south beach opposite the residence of Mr Warden Price. The channel, which was formerly near his house, is now some hundred yards to the northward. The cargo of the Rambler was landed in good order and condition.

There have been, all sorts of suspicions, and innumerable rumors, as to the causes of the John Penn's non-appearance at this port, on her -way from Nelson, whence she sailed at midnight on Monday last. These were set at rest yesterday by our receiving from her Xel son agents, Messrs Thomson and Stavett, the Information that she had put back to Nelson for coals. The probability is that, starting with a small supply, and being detained at the Spit by a westerly gale. Captain Carey has thought it prudent to return to renew her stock, rather than attempt the passage clown the coast. She will probably reach here to-day or to-morrow, as she is announced to sail tj-morrow for Greymouth and Ilokitika, returning from these ports so as to leave here for the Manukau on Wednesday'.

As will be seen by advertisement elsewherethe steamship Omeo leaves Greymouth for Melbourne on or about the 2lst instant. The Omeo is the first steamer leaving that port for Melbourne direct. Passengers for Sydney can book through by her. The daily fluctuation of passengers between Auckland and Shortland is 300, or about 2000 per week, who are transported by three regular steamers, two or three smaller ones being used more for curgu than passengers. Besides th se there are never less than fifteen to twenty saiiing vessels at the Shortland anchorage, nearly half of those being engaged in the timber and coal trade.
