The Westport Times. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER. 2, 1869.
We recently referred to a peculiar aucl novel description of tramway as a probable means to the end of developing what may, without local vanity, be designated the greatest of the great resources of this district—the Mount Rochfort coalfield. The more the merits of the invention are examined, the more strikingly . apparent they become, and we regret that Ave must exclude from our present number such further description of its peculiarities as is necessary to a full conception of its adaptability to the work in question, and to many other works on the West Coast. W c e notice..tb.at.__in ponded wire-rope track and tramway," somewhat similar in design, has been exhibited by Mr Alexander Cairns, aided by the Government. The model itself—on very slight rope—can carry a weight of 5 cwfc. on a span of 300 feet, and Mr Cairns, in bringing the experiments under the notice of the Timaru Board of Works, says:—"l am prepared to undertake to construct a span of 300 feet to carry 20 cwts., or any continuous length of bridge'in spans of 100 feet, carrying an American waggon with eight horses up to ten tons at one time, at one-fifth of the cost of a pile and platform bridge."
