MINING COMPANIES LIMITED.

In moving the second reading of the " Mining Companies Limited Liability Act Amendment Bill," in the House of Representatives, last week, Mr Haughton said it was not an amendment of any portion of the Mining Companies Bill, but merely the addition of certain clauses which were found to be necessary to be introduced in the Bill. He might state that the original Bill was adopted from a Bill passed in Victoria in ISG3. It had amendments with regard to the wind-ing-up of companies and to provide for the registration of companies for bringing in water supply. Some doubts existed as to whether those companies could bo registered under the existing Bill. The Amendment Bill also provided for giving the manager of the company registered under this Act a status in the Warden's Court, upon which there existed some doubt as to whether a manager having a miner's right in his own name, had a right to appear for the company. The Bill also provided for preventing companies registering in the name of other companies which were more successful or with similar names, thus deceiving the unwary to a great extent. The new clauses would render the Act a most useful and beneficial measure, lie hoped the Government would not object to the second reading of the Bill, inasmuch as he intended to name a late day for going into committee ; he intended to name that day week for going into Committee on the Bill. The Bill was read a second time, and ordered to ho committed for Tuesday.
