An accident occurred yesterday to a miner named Neil Dogherty, on the Shamrock Lead, by which he sustained a fracture of the leg and considerable laceration of the arm and shoulder. The accident occurred by the horse belonging to the claim falling while working in the whim. After extricating the horse, the weight of the bucket which was being raised pulled the shaft round. Dogherty and another tried to check it, but the force proved too much for them, and, after being swung round nearly sixty feet, Dogherty was thrown down with some violence, fracturing the leg above the ankle in two places. • The parties adjoining soon, mustered in large numbers, and brought him in to the Westport Hospital, where ho was immediately attended to by Dr Thorpe. The following is the only fresh item of intelligence with regard to the rush to AVest Wanganni. It appears in the Nelson Mail of Monday:—" The Heathcote, -which hit West Wanganni on Sunday last at twelve o'clock, arrived this morning at ten o'clock. The captain reports the Sea Breeze and Supply in West Wanganui, and the Pearl in the Big EivGr. He also reports about 300 men at Anatore Creek, about 70 of whom are doing well, the remainder being engaged in prospecting the surrounding creeks. All appear to be satisfied." We hear from another source that the report as to the number of men on the ground is much exaggerated, and that a very different statement was made by the captain of the Heathcote. The Superintendent of Nelson has notified the appointa ent of the three former members of the Westport Committee of Education, viz :—Messrs Harris, Tyler, and Eeid.
