THE STEAMER KENNEDY ASHORE AT HOKITIKA.

THE ENGLISH MAIL HOUELY EXPECTED. THE GENEEAL ASSEMBLY. ME FOX'S NATIVE POLICY. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FROII OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT!?.) Hokitika, Monday. The steamer Kennedy, when attempting to enter the river at eleven o'clock yesterday morning, got aground, and was driven up on the North beaca in rather a bad situation. To-day, however, she has shifted to a much safer and better position. She has been hauled fully her own length towards the river, and would have got off during the last tide but for the fact of the warp having broken. She has not sustained the slightest injury as yet, and it is probable that she will be got into the river during the next tide. The steamship Eangitoto, with the English mail on board, is now hourly expected. It has been arranged to land her mails and passengers at the Grey. (From the Nelson Colonist.) Wellington, July 8. Great interest has been excited in reference to the following resolutions, which Mr Fox had tabled for to-day, promising, on moving them, that he would fully explain the Defence policy of the present Government. To-day, however, they were postponed, because Mr Fox had not been able to confer with Mr Vogel, the Colonial Treasurer, who is confined to his house with an attack of gout. They will positively come on to-morrow (Friday.) The resolutions are:— 1. That, in the opinion of this House, the existing expenditure on the Colonial Forces is altogether beyond the financial resources of the colony, and that it is im-

possible to coninue the same consistently with the maintenance of the public credit. 2. That it is therefore necessary that steps be forthrith taken to bring that expenditure withn the appropriation of the current year, tfiich ought not to exceed £150,000. The resolutons present the first battle-ground for the Opposition against the ne\i Ministry.
