RESIDENT MAGISTRATE COURT.

Saturday, June 12. (Before J. Giles, Esq., E.M.) STEALING. DUCKS.

Henry Bradley, junior, and Henry Goddard, two youths, were charged with stealing two ducks, the property oi'Mr Harris, proprietor of the .National Hotel; and Henry Bradley, senior, the father of one of the defendants, was charged with receiving the same, knowing them to be stolen property. Mr Tyler appeared for the prisoners. The witnesses called by the police were Mr Harris, Stephen Taylor, a person in his employment, and John Hurst, a person in the service of Messrs Touks and Hughes, of the Empire Hotel. The Magistrate considered that there was no case against Hoary Bradley, junior, and, along with Margaret King, bar-maid in the Casino de Venise, he was called as a witness for the defence. His statement was that Goddard saw the ducks in Freeman street, and drove them into his (Bradley's) lather's bouse, saying " Here are two visitors for you, just arrived by the steamer." They were driven into the yard and kept there " until some one would own them." The Magistrate considered the charge against Goddard and against Henry Bradley, senior, fully proved, and he sentenced each to fourteen days' hard labor.

MONDAT, JuXE 14. The Court was occupied for a number of hours with the hearing of a civil case in which Thomas Dewdney, batcher at the Caledonian Terrace, was the plaintiff, and Mrs Anderson, of the Steam Packet Hotel, Westport, was the defendant. The claim was nominally one of £IOO for money which the plaintiff alleged he had bad lent to the defendant. The defendant's statement was that the money had been presented to her at different times as gifts. Mr Tyler appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Pitt for the defendant. In their addresses to the Court, as well as iu the evidence, there was some amusing references to the relationships subsisting betwean the plaintiff and the defendant, but our space does not permit of us reporting in this issue either these or other features of the case. The Magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiff for £79, with costs.
