THE MOKIHINTUI RUSH.
PUETHEE PAETICULAES. Within the past two days a number of men have started for the ground recently opened at Mokihinui, and where a prospecting claim has been granted. The majority seem, however, to prefer to make the journey overland, and the intention of despatching the steamer Wallabi has not been carried out, although she brought a few men for the rush from Greymouth. To-day the Warden, Dr Giles, proceeds to the ground. Meantime we have a report from Mr Lambert, Detective Officer, which has been transmitted to Inspector Franklyn, and by him placed at our disposal. It is written on Tuesday, and is as follows: " I have the honor to report, in accordance with your instructions, that I proceeded to the rush situated about two miles inland from the sea-beach, at the back of Watson's stora i
" The place where the gold has been struck is the other side of the saddle, attheheadofDufty's creek, and it has been taken out of a tunnel which is driven about ninety feet into the terrace. The lead appears, according to the lay of the tunnel, to run north and south, the bottom being sandstone. The terrace extends south about three quarters of a mile from where the gold was struck. Then a break occurs, similar to those on the Caledonian terraces, and opens again into other terraces, which, as yet, have not been prospected '• I enclose prospects obtained from dishes of dirt taken promiscuously out of the claim by strangers. There appear to be about one hundred and fifty people on the ground, but, as no other claim has been bottomed, I can form no opinion as yet, but all the miners I have spoken to express themselves perfectly satisfied with their prospects.
"P.S.—Since writing the above, prospects have been obtained by strangers in other parts of the tunnel. One of them I* enclose—weight, ldwt. lOgrs."
