MINING INCIDENTS.
Authorities on gold raining have averred that Melbourne is in the midst of a goldfield, and this would seem to he about to bo proved, as in Grant's claim at Anderson's Creek, and immediately under the Eiver Farra, a rich reef has been found, a trial crushing from which gave l|oz to the ton. A company is being formed to carry on the works, to be called the Tarra Tunnelling Co. The Otago Daily Times has received a private communication which states tbat a party of miners near Cromwell have been successful in striking a quartz reef in that neighborhood. They kept .their discovery secret, acquired the old Hindon machinery, which they quickly erected, and concealed as far as they could the result of their first crushing. It has leaked out, however, that the yield has been 1450z. 4dwts., being over three ounces to the ton. Other claims have been immediately taken up. Should anything like the first success continue, a great addition will be made to the gold production of the Province.
