MAELBOEOUGH PEOVINCE IN DIFFICULTIES. ENGAGEMENT at EUATAHANA. Blenhiem, Thursday. There is great sensation in the Provincial Council here. Every shilling of the Provincial Funds (£2582) has been seized by the Bank of New Zealand just after the Appropriation Bill had passed. All parties protested against the act, and stiff resolutions on the subject were unanimously passed by the Council, to be sent to the Colonial Secretary. Contracts for repairing rotten bridges and, impassable roads were to be paid out of this sum. These contracts are already let, and some of the works are in progress. This proceeding of the Bank is contrary to Mr. Stafford's letter, and in violation of special written agreements. Mr. Eyes's motion for a petition in favor of abolishing Provincial Governments passed the Council, which is now prorogued. ■Wellington, May 25th. Our losses in the engagement at Ruatahaua were:— Killed : Sub-Inspector H. B. Travers, Lieutenant Daniel White, Constables Kelly, Davis, James Parkinson, and two Native guides. Wounded: Constables Pearson, Wasley, Leydon, James Hall, Thos. Atcheson, William Eyan; slightly, Matthew Eoberts and Carl Hansen.
