We publish in another column a debate in the Provincial Council on the items of printing and advertising connected with the South-West Goldfields. No smaller sums than £1225 to the South-West Gold&elds, and £IOOO "miscellaneous," were passed last year, but no comparative statement had been shown of the amount so charged to the South-West Goldfields. After considerable banter and opposi-
tion, not only from the Government, but from one of the members for the City of Nelson, who proved to be a Government contractor for a portion of the printing, the following return was obtained from the Government on the motion of Mr Donne, and it certainly does constitute, as the mover of the resolution observed, "a curious study" : ReTUKN OP THE SUMS TOTAL PAID TO VARIOUS NeWSPAI'JEES AND PfHNTING Offices., fob the teak ended Makck 31, 1869 :—- Printing Advertising Total Colonist 9 16 3 | 103 19 1 I]lß 15 4 Examiner 792 14 9 145 13 9 933 8 6 Mail 1 2 6 f 46 1 10 [ 47 4 4 Westport Times Advt. & Printing :.72 6 9 Evening Star do do 13 3 0 Charleston Herald do do 42 11 0 Greg River Argus do do 26 13 0 .£1259 1 11
