The ketch Jane Elkin put back yesterday to this port, after being four days out, bound to Hokitika. The brigantine Mary left Port Phillip Heads on the 22nd ul't., at 9 a.m., with a fresh wind from the S.W., and on the 23rd took her departure from Kent's Group with u strong W.S.W. gale. On Saturday the wind still increasing, with a very heavy sea, and still hanging to the southward with heavy squalls, double-reefed the topsail and mainsail in a terrific squall, during which the main-boom was carried away. On Thursday made the land, the wind hanging the ship oft', and a strong current setting to the northward. Anchored abreast of Waimongoroa. On Sunday the steam-tug Lioness took her in tow and arrived in safety in the Buller river. The Mary brings a large cargo of general merchandise with twenty passengers.
