BULLER RIVER.
DISCO VEEY op a QTJABTZ-BEEF,
(from our own correspondent.) Since my last letter two new features have cropped out in our industrial resources. One is a beautiful cedar which is so plentiful on the Lyell that it is at present being sawn for fluming. The second is a quartzreef, which is likely to alter the whole circumstances of the district. Two claims have been marked out on the Irishman's Creek, about one and a half miles above its junction with the Lyell. At this point a vein of quartz about thirteen feet thick intersects the slate reef, and immediately below specimens of gold with slate and quartz attached have been obtained, and, from their appearance, the distance they have travelled cannot be great. The parties who have pegged off the claims are old experienced quartzreefers, and they are very Banguine of success. Dr Giles has promised them every aid in his power towards prospecting and fully developing the resources of the district, but the first step in this matter is constructing a track. The Irishman's Creek is situated three and a half miles up the Lyell from its junction with the Buller, and the reef is one one-fourth miles up the creek, so that parties working it will have to swag their tools, provisions, &c, fully five miles. This in itself is a very great drawback which our paternal Government of "old identities " in Nelson ought to look to if they wish their hop-gardens to pay. The new rush reported in my last has about found its level. About half the parties who rushed it have left—some for their old claims up the Buller, and others, who had no claims previously, for ground lower down towards the Inangahua, paying about four notes a week. There are only about four claims, three and " Spanish Charlie's," now working, and they are not expected to pay more than wages. Another rush has taken place up the Inangahua, on a creek which falls into that river about eight miles above its junction with the Buller, and about the same distance up the creek, the name of which I forget. It will be altogether about fourteen miles from Christy's store. There are about sixty men on the ground. It is not rich, but it is payable. The want of a track is here felt very much, and diverts the income of the province into Westland, as Mr Williams can profitably pack goods purchased at the Grey to this point, which would be taken from Westport if there was only a track. The road which the Government formerly made is now almost entirelycarried away. The wants of the Upper Buller district are most shamefully neglected by the authorities. All applications for water rights, miners' rights, &c, &c, have to be made to Mr F. Adank, an unpaid and irresponsible man. If so inclined he has it in his power to ante-date water applications and grievously wrong ininerß applying for water privileges. I do not believe Mr Adank to be capable of doing so, but, nevertheless, this is no way to transact Government business. Only on Saturday last I heard him tell Mr Coe, when handing him some applications to give the "Warden, to request Dr Giles to appoint some one to receive those papers, as doing so greatly interfered with his business. It is truly disgraceful to have Court business going about begging in this way. Mr Coe has eompleted his survey of the race for Noble and party, and disposed of his share in their ground and race which they gave him for his professional labors.
Albert and party have completed their race, which has been a very heavy work. Mr Sloan has also nearly completed his much wanted hotel, which I have no doubt will pay well.
