THE DISCOVERY OF GOLD IN TASMANIA.
The Hobart Town Mercury lately published the following in an extra edition:—
Government have had a claim made on them for a reward for a discovery made under the published regulations. The discoverers are Mr John S. Goodall and Mr James Freeman. The following are the particulars to hand, as given by the discoverers, who report the discovery of a rich quartz reef close to the base of Tower Hill, at the head of Major's Gully, and about ten miles from Fingal. The reef crops out and shows a wall of quartz of between 500 and 600 yards in length, and is supposed to range from six to ten feet in thickness. They say that in five minutes they picked up over fifty large specimens all showing gold without breaking the stone. They say further that there is not the slightest doubt the discovery will prove not only a payable but a very rich goldfield. The surface of the hill is represented as being covered with thick scrub, the reef being about 1000 feet above the level of Major's Gully. The discoverers say in their communication to the Colonial Secretary that they could have picked up a dray-load of loose stone, all showing gold lying on the surface. It will be remembered that some time since, when there was an alleged discovery of gold at Fingal, various persons took up land in the locality of Major's Gully, and it is believed that this discovery extends through the private properties of Messrs E. M. Fisher, M'Grafch of the Post-ofiice, and others. The discoverers are now endeavoring to make arrangements with those gentlemen.
