THE NATIVE WAR.
ALARMING NEWS FBOM* TATJBANGA. SKIRMISH WITH TE KOOTI. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FBOM OUK OWN CORBE6PONDENT.) Wellington, Monday. Alarming news has just been received from Tauranga. It is reported that an attack upon the settlement by Kereopa and Hakeria was imminent. The women and children had been sent for safety to Auckland. Colonel Elliot had applied for some companies of the 18th, for the relief of Tauranga, but had been refused. On Friday a skirmish took place between Te Kooti's followers and the party under command of Major Mair. Te Kooti was forced to retired, and the Arawas followed in pursuit. The Gazette announces that Mr M'Lean, Superintendent of Hawke's Bay, is no longer agent for the General Government in that Province. The Government is understood to be very augry with Mr M'Lean for detaining the Ngatiporus at Kapier. The Government organ, the Advertiser, has an article about it, and says " the behavior of the provincial authorities of Hawke's Bay furnishes one of the most monstrous instances of the selfish and insane ultraprovincial spirit the colony has yet seen."
