The steamer Charles Edward arrived at an early hour yesterday morning, having returned direct from Greymouth, without proceeding to Hokitika ; and in the afternoon she sailed direct for Wanganui, having been chartered to bring thence a cargo of cattle. The steamer Wanganui has apparently completed her overhaul in the dock at Port Chalmers, and is now on her way to the West Coast. The barqiie Sprinkbok has put into Melbourne, damaged by lightning. The lightning struck the mainmast head, shattering it, and carrying away the topmasts with all the spars and gear, and effectually crippling the barque aloft. Nor was this all, for the mas; of wreck got under the vessel and caused hei to spring a leak through the constant chafing She was making water at the rate of tei: inches an hour. A series of charges of an important character have been brought against Captair. John Wills Weeks, of the immigrant ship Ramsey. The charges were numerous, and were in effect that the captain had been drunt on more than one occasion ; that on two occasions he had been suffering from delirium tremens : that he had reduced the water supplied to the saloon passengers for washing ; that he had been rude to passengers ; was ir the habit of swearing ; that he had ehargee the doctor with being drunk ; had on one oc casion ignored the doctor's authority ; that he had carried on a correspondence with one of the single girls; and that he had been caught eavesdropping at the door of the doctor's cabin. The barque Japan, the pioneer vessel of the Victorian whaling fleet, came out of Messrs Hughes and Sinnott's floating dock, Melbourne, ou the Ist ult, and is now being ■fitted out. {BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.)
