Both the Charles Edward and the Murray arrived from Nelson on Sunday, after rapid passages to and from that port. The Waipara arrived yesterday evening, from Hokitika and the intermediate ports, including the Teremakau, and at five o'clock this morning sailed again for the south. The s.s. Murray is now commanded by Capt. MGillivray, who was formerly chief officer of the steamer John Penn. He is succeeded in the John Penn by Mr Dillon, who tormerly commanded the steamer Nelson. A schooner and a ketch were outside the part last evening—the former supposed to be the Heathcote, and the latter supposed to be the Mary Louisa. The Lyttelton street wharf, or the portion of protection work which remained after the Wember flood, has lately been strengthened and otherwise fitted for vessels going alongside. The work has been done under Capt Leech s supervision, and although it has cost little, it has had the effect of mating the wharf more available than others that have cost much more. For the information of shippers of goods irom Duncdm or the intermediate ports, the agent of the steamer Beautiful Star has sent us a telegram stating that she is intended to leave Dunedin for Westport on or about Saturday next. The barque Malay has arrived at Nelson, alter a passage of 117 days from London. The steamer Phoebe, which arrived from Wellington on Thursday morning, went on the hard on the Fifeshire Island to get cleaned previous to proceeding on her vovaue to Auckland. The Phoebe made a visit to iort Chalmers to get docked, but she was tound to be too large and heavy a vessel, and tailed m the object for which she undertook tne trip Hence, therefore, the necessity of getting her cleaned in Nelson. We understand that the s.s. John Ponn in rounding the Sand Spit, on her way here from the West Coast, ran ashore off Bush Lnd Point, but after a detention of five hours was got off again without sustaining any damage.— Nelson Mail.
