NOTES FROM CHARLESTON.
A rather clever capture of a burglar was effected at Charleston, on Sunday, about 4 p.m., by Mounted Constable Doris. It appeared the constable was exercising his horse on the beach, when his attention was drawn to a rather suspicious looking customer, in a still more suspicious position, emerging from behind a house. Doris had not proceeded two hundred yards when he was accosted by Mrs Healy, who reported that she had just been robbed of a gold watch and gold lockets, and, from the description she gave of the thief the constable immediately retraced his steps, overhauling the party who first excited his suspicions, and charged him with the theft.
The accused became very indignant, and seemed quite taken aback at the coolness of the constable who searched him, but failed to find any of the stolen articles in his possession. Doris, however, with an amount of preseverance that did him credit, ordered the man to retrace his steps, when the hut was reached wherein was discovered, after breaking the thatch, the stolen property. The constable brought the prisouer to the cam;). He turns out to be one of a desperate gang of thieves in Auckland, and mate of Wilson, of West Coast notoriety. He will be brought before the Magistraie to-day.
