GOLDFIELDS IN TASMANIA.
One more story of the discovtry of a goldfield ia Tasmania ia receiving currency. The Hobart Town Mercury of the 20th ult. says :—" We are in a position to-day to announce another gold discovery in Tasmania, which has been kept a secret for a number of years, and one which gives considerable promise. It seems that in the year 1851 Mr Francis Allison, then just returned from California, became overseer of Formosa, an estat 6 belonging to Mr W. E. Laurence, and situated near Cressy. Whilst there Mr Allison tried several parts of the country for gold, and discovered it in Brumby's Creek. He took the gold to Mr R. C. Gunn, who was superintendent of the estate under a will, and requested that the ground should be properly prospected, but Mr Q-unn, for reasons which need not be mentioned, re quested Mr Allison not to divulge his knowledge of the existence of gold on the land, as it might prove injurious to the estate. In this way the discovery was hidden and might have remained so to this day, but for accidental cir cumstances having brought it to light. The locality of Bromby's Creek near Cressy is one where a gold-field is very likely to exist, and it is a pity that steps have not been taken to test Mr Allison's discovery."
