The s.s. Waipara arrived in port yesterday at 3 p.m. During her absence from this port, she- visited Okarita, where her visit was a welcome one, as she brought several necessaries for the Alpine Company and others who, by the loss of flumhig and otherwise, had suffered during the late severe weather. She left Hokitika on her northern trip yesterday , and received some cargo from the steamer Alhambra, then in the roadstead. With this, and with a large cargo previously shipped, she steamed for the Grey, getting in A urir.g the same tide. At the Grey, as at the Ru110.., /!,.. „1,„„, 10 T Jo {„ fl„ a „„„a;tioT,, t«t at Hokitika it is not very easily workable, be : ng broad and shallow. She left the Grey at 12.30 a.m.; got into Fox's at 5 a.m., landing 25 tons of cargo ; reached Charleston at 9.30, entered the cove, and landed about 20 tons ; and, leaving there at noou, steamed on for "West-port, for which she has about 10 tons of goods. "Wo are indepted to Capt. Bascand for late Grey and Hokitika papers, and for Melbourne papers up to the 9th inst., which were received from the Alhambra.
The s.s. Wullabi returned from Wanganui yesterday morning, with a full cargo of live stock and produce. She left Wanganui on Tuesday. The s.s. Kennedy, which left Nelson at noon on Wednesday, arrived yesterday at 11 a.m. The telegram of her departure from Nelson wss received after the vessel had arrived at Wostpoft. An iron steamer named the Osprcy, 45 feet long, has been launched at Wellington. She was launched with steam up, and all ready for a start. The schooner Ann, from Charleston, which sot ashore at Point Elisabeth, was got off, and towed to Greymouth by the Dispatch. She is strained, but not seriously. A fire broke out on board" the Tararua last week, when on the Government slip at Williamstown. It arose in the engine-room, by a tin of kerosene taking fire. It was got under by Captain Hagley and others, before any sei'ious damage was done. A new iron clipper schooner, the St. Kilda, which arrived a few days ago at Melbourne, from Glasgow, has become the property of Messrs Spencc Brothers, for a sum of £3IOO. She has been despatched to Natal, with TOO diggers bound for the South African goldfields.
