STATE OF AFFAIRS AT WANGANUI.

TITOKO WAEU'S MANIFESTO. I Colonel Lyon has now the chief command of the forces at "Wanganui. There is nothing specially new from tbe Front. The inhabitants have taken steps for the defence of the town, which is crowded with ruined settlers driven in from their farms,,

aud whose condition is now occupying serious attention in "Wellington aud elsewhere. The warning sent in by Titoko Warn to the men in WoodalFs redoubt, was addressed to Colonel M'Donnell, and was to this effect:— "This is a piece of earnest and sound advice for Whitmore. Salutations to you. This is to ask you who does England belong to, and, to whom belongs the land or country you are now standing upon ? I will tell you ; the heavens and the earth were made at one time. In one day was man created and all productions of any kind that are in the world; aud if you think or are aware that G-od created all it is well; we are equal thereon. You were formed a European, and England was named as your country ; we are Maoris, in New Zealand. Bethink you —there has been placed between you and I a great barrier—an ocean. "Why did you not consider, or take thought, before you crossed over here ? I did not go from here over to you. Stand away from my place to your own country in the middle of the ocean ; go away from the town to some other place. Arise, and be baptised, and let your sins be washed away. Calling upon the name of the Lord. Sufficient; from Titoko WABtr."

On the following day, LieutenantColonel Herri ck marched off his entire force from Woodall's redoubt, with the exception of fourteen men left to man a blockhouse. Directly he commenced his retreat, Titoko Waru's men deridingly cried out—" Hook it! Hook it."
