THE LATE ARREST IN WELLINGTON.

Our "Wellington telegrams, a few days ago, contained information of the arrest of a Mr Bruce, said to have been formerly of the Melbourne Customs, as he was on the point of starting with the Panama mail steamer. The following particulars are given in the Independent: — On Tuesday morning a gentlemanlylooking man, named Henry A. Bruce, was arrested on board the s.s. Tararua on the charge of embezzling a sum of money, the property of P. W. Howden, of Melbourne. The arrest -was made by Sergeant Monaghan, in consequence of information received from Sydney by the s.s. Rakaia, and the prisoner was brought before the Resident Magistrate's Court the same morning,--and remanded for eight days. When arrested a large sum of gold was found on his person, and we understand he had booked a passage for himself, wife, and daugher, at Melbourne for Panama in the name of Brice. The circumstances of his

apprehension are as follows:—It was suspected that he had levanted in the Tararua from Melbourne, so the police there telegraphed to the police at instructing them to send information by the b.s. Eakaia to the authorities here to have the man apprehended. The Eakaia left Sydney on December 2nd, while the Tararua left Melbourne on Nov, 28th, but as the former came direct, she arrived here some fifteen hours before the Tararua, which had to call at other ports. In consequence, Mr Bruce was unexpectedly arrested here. The police had an excellent description of his dress, features, &c, but no photograph, so that he has not been absolutely identified. Besides paying £250 for passage money, he had in his possession a sum of £230 when apprehended.
