(FROM OTJE OWN COBBESPONDEIST.) The s.s. John Penn put in an pearance off the port on SrmcUvy loot, and was tendered immediately by one of the surf-boats. She brought as passengers, Messrs Skoglund, Williams, Coaiiskey, and Power. The schooner Ann, with a general cargo from Greymouth, arrived later in the day. The Provincial Secretary, Mr Greenfield, arrived here on Monday, en route to Cobden and the Grey.
The wet weather we are now experiencing is of great advantage to our mining population, enabling all parties to work their claims. Great activity prevails on the different leads, nearly all the claims in which machinery is employed being at work day and night.
Our respected townsman, Mr Davis, one of the principal projectors of the Nile Crushing Cement and Race Co., is about to leave this district, news of importance demanding his presence in England having been received. To the energy manifested by him and his colleagues in inaugurating works of magnitude, may be attributed the many great and important works which have been undertaken throughout this district.
On Brandon Hill, Whisky Terrace, and Deadman's Flat, all parties express themselves well satisfied with their prospects.
On Argyle Terrace, Hill and party are continuing to earn good wages. Amateur's party This claim has yielded £7OOO during the last thirteen months, and is expected to produce £2OOO more before being worked out. Greaves and party —This claim has taken out £6OOO during the last nine months and will probably yield £ISOO more before being worked out. G-ordon and party. This claim is still keeping its name as one of the best on the lead. Two of the shares in this claim have lately changed hands, for £2lO each.
Parsons and party have erected their new water-wheel, which is 30 ft. in diameter, and is a credit to the builders. Prom seven to eight feet of cement runs through this claim, which has an area of one acre.
Morgan and party, Knox and party, and Kir ton and party, are averaging from £lO to £ls per man, weekly. Henderson and party have brought water in from a distance of 6 miles, after much trouble and expense, in one place having a length of two hundred yards of fiuming, ninety feet high. £250 was refused a few days ago for a share in this claim.
