At the Resident Magistrate's Court, on Monday, Thomas Surgeon was charged with being drunk, creating a disturbance so as to cause a crowd, and using obscene language. The Magistrate accepted the defendant's statement that it was the first time he had appeared in Court, and, treating the three charges as one, he fined him 40s. Patrick Whelan, for drunkenness, was fined 10s.
Amis-reading was caused, by the printing of the words " twenty thousand " for " twelve thousand" in a letter inserted on Wednesday on the subject of river protection. The context would show that it was an error.
The result of the Gift Auction sale ■which was held last week on account of the liquidation of the price of the harmonium and for other Church purposes, •was very satisfactoi'y to the Committee and collectors, having yielded the amount of £3O. A few of the articles were uusold, and the balance of the lot will be offered at Mr Munro's first weekly sale, which takes place on Saturday. In addition to the above amount, there was a sum of £2l collected in cash for the same object. In the case of Apted v. Kynnerslcy, £IOOO is the amount of damages claimed. A "Wellington telegram states that Mr Stafford has been returned for Timaru. Some of the prospectors in the Kaitake ranges, Taranaki, have struck a quartzreef, specimens of -which have been sent to Auckland to be tested. In the Supreme Court, G-. W. Brookes, charged with poisoning cattle at Motueka, has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment. The Governor and Mr Stafford have returned from Wanganui to Wellington. They remained a .very short time in the disaffected districts.
By the Alhambra, forty-four men who had joined the Armed Constabulary left Nelson last week, for Wellington. Twenty-eight were from the West Coast.
A company, with a capital of £3600, has been formed to work the coal at Collingwood, in this Province. The letters and papers received by the Panama mail, and addressed to Westport, were brought to Nelson by the Airedale, and thenco by the Charles Edward. The last escort from Charleston to Westport is said to have brought the largest amount of gold yet forwarded here. The amount, according to the Herald,, was —from Charleston, 74740z5. sdwts. lgr ; from Brighton, 1850ozs.; total 93240z5. sdwts. lgr. Mr Sloan has commenced to execute his contract for the protection of the river bank. Ho has commenced work at the end of Gladstone street, where property is most in jeopardy. Eeports were recently received that gold had been found in Madagascar, as well as at the Cape. Mauritius papers of Sept. 22 have, however, been received in Melbourne, and they do noc confirm the news with regard to Madagascar.
