THE MELBOURNE CUP.

We gave, yesterday, the result of the race for the Melbourne Cup. The following description of the race is given by the Melbourne Age : After the usual difficulty attendant upon getting two dozen and one horses from the post on even terms, Mr Watson dropped his flag, Booyoolee showing afar greater inclination for the opposite course, while Lantern seemed to be emulating feats more reconcileable to the circus than the race-course, Shenandoah having previously shown that her tender recollections of the Cup course were still extant. At last, away they went, the grey and gold off, mine host of the Albion showing to particular advantage, both Barwon and Sherioridoah making the running at a good pace. Immediately behind came Bylong, Little Eish, Smolensko, Glcncoe, Nimblefoot and Strop, on whose quarters were conspicuou 3 Gulnare and Stumpy, with Ragpicker on the inside next the rails, and Mary Ann on the outside, Tim Whiffler being within five of the last horse on passing the grand stand. On went the cavalcade up the river side, Mr Cleeland's pair still leading by a clear length. Passing the site of the old grand stand the pace began to tell; here Strop and Glencoe made a forward movement, taking third and fourth places; Tim Whiffler having succeeded in get ting rid of the ruck, occupying the sth position, Smolensko, Milesian, NTimblefoot, Mary Ann, and Gulnare leading the ruck some few lengths behind. In this way the abattoirs were passed, when Barwon dropped back beaten. ■From this out the race remained with four horses only—Shenandoah, who was still leading, Strop being second, Gleneoe third and Tim Whiffler fourth. On rounding the last turn, Glencoe made a spirt, and then was the yellow and black seen gaily leading, never being afterwards headed, and winning very cleverly by two lengths ; Strop passing Shenandoah inside the distance, and finishing an excellent second, Tim Whiffler making a great but unsuc-

cessful effort for third place, obtained by Shenandoah, who was two lengths behind Strop, and as many before the favourite. Time, 3 min. 42 sec.
