The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1868.
By the telegraph we have the information, as painful as it is provoking, that the first attack made upon the Natives by the forces under Colonel AVlritmore's command has 'not only been unsuccessful, but has been essentially disastrous. Putting even the mildest construction upon the news received, it is apparent that the Natives both held their ground against their assailants, and beat back our forces, pursuing them to their shelter, and inflicting upon them, in killed, wounded, and " missing," a very serious numerical loss. That the loss has been otherwise serious is apparent from the occurrence of the name of Major Hunter among the killed, and from the fact that the force included picked men of pluck and experience. The sequel of such a retreat will, in all probability, be in advance of the enemy still closer to our settlements, and the next news from Wanganui may reasonably be looked for with interest and anxiety.
