Amongst the passengers by the John Penn, on Thursday night last, was the ex-Mayor of Hokitika, Mr Wm. Shaw, who was proceeding to Shortland, for the purpose of starting a paper, to be termed the " Shortland Times." Not only was Mr. Shaw himself a passenger, but he took with him some ninety packages of printing material, and a full staff, the whole, no doubt, causing a considerable outlay as a start. Such an exodus speaks anything but well for Hokitika. Late Auckland papers state that a number of miners have proceeded to Ohinemuri from Shortland, as a depution to wait upon Te Hira with the view of inducing the native chief to open up the district of the Upper Thames. It appears to be very doubtful, however, whether the mission will be attended with success, as Te Hira's party are said to be altogether opposed to the presence of the pakeha iu their country.
