PROGRESS COMMITTEE.
The newly elected Progress Committee held their first meeting last night at the Empire Hotel. The following members were present:— Messrs Alcorn (in the chair), Humphrey, Hughes, Leslie, Bain, Field, and Milne.
In consequence of the absence of other two members, Messrs Powell and O'Conor, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Leslie, to defer the election of officers until next meeting. A subcommittee consisting of Messrs Hughes O'Conor, and Bain, were appointed to frame a code of rules for the future guidance and conduct of the Committee, the same to be presented at a future meeting. Mr Bain suggested the propriety of at once calling the attention of the Grovernment, to the present dangerous state of the river bank protection works, and of urging upon the Executive, the absolute necessity of expending a further moderate sum, in order to secure from total loss the money already spent on the works. He mentioned that he had been informed that evening by Mr Lowe, of the receipt by that gentleman, of a telegram from the Superintendant, authorising an expenditure upon the wharf works, to the extent of one hundred pounds. Of course this sum would be quite inadequate, to secure from loss the whole of the works just abandoned. In view of there not being any likelihood of a steamer leaving for Nelson before the end of the week, it was arranged to defer any action in the matter until next meeting, which was fixed for Friday evening, at eight o'clock.
