CHARLESTON NEWS.
PROGRESS COMMITTEE MEETING. At a meeting of the Progress Committee, held on Tuesday eveuing, at the Melbourne Hotel, Mr Gasquoin (chairman), and a fair number of the Committee present, a few letters were read by the Secretary ; one from Mr Kynnersley, acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Progress Committee relative to the removal of dangerous rock in Constant Bay, and stating that he had referred the matter to the District Engineer, who would give it his speedy attention. Auother i'rom Mr Beamiss (Cobb and Co.'s Agent, at Westport), relative to the proposed establishment of a daily mail between Charleston and Westport. The letter stated, that in the event of his (Mr Beamiss) tendering for the Government contract being successful, he would engage to carry the mail the three days extra in the week for £IOO. It was then proposed by Mr Isaacs, and seconded by Mr Russell, that a letter be written to the Government requesting them to reconsider their recent resolve with regard to the triweekly mail, it having been ascertained that the additional expense of a daily one would be only £IOO. Carried. It was proposed by Mr Jones and seconded by Mr Allen, that Mr Beamiss be informed what has transpired relative to the mail.
After a vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting adjourned. A meeting of the Hospital Committee was held on Thursday evening at the Melbourne Hotel. There were present, Messrs (Broad in chair), Bowman, Neale, M'Coy,M'Carthy and Connoly. The minutes of last meeting being read and confirmed, the monthly return for September, was submitted by the Hospital surgeon. From this report it appeared that the number of patients remaining in Hospital, from the last month was seven, and nine were admitted during the present mont'i, making in all 16. During September, 10 were discharged, and 1 died, so that 5 still remain in Hospital. During the period five out patients received attention and medicines, a codicil was added to the report, by Dr Dakers, that in consequence of the irregular attendance of out patients, he found it necessary to post a notice to the effect that, those who absented themselves 10 days without permission, should be regarded as cured. Subsequently in committee the period was altered to three days. The expenses for the month, including salaries &c, were £62 ss. 7d. : but £295 are still available from Government. After some bil's being passed for payment, Mr Broad asked if any objection would be made by the committee, to Dr Dakers attending the Brighton Hospital, in case of nee-
essity or emergency, Dr Lee having | lately left that Institution and the , d ; strict: — to this request no objection ] was entered. A letter was read from ; a man named Sommerville, requesting the per mission of the committee to pay periodic visits to tha Hospital, so that the surgeon might perform a certain operation which his case required, a postcript however, to the letter from Dr D.ikers preclude its possibility, owing to the want of certain instruments which were absolutely necessary. After a vote of thanks to the chair the meeting adjourned. The Committee of Management for the Kynnersley Banquet, met on Thursday evening at the Melbourne Hotel, Mr Jones in the chair, and a full attendance present. Pinal arrangements were made with Mr Behan for the catering of the banquet. Arrangements were also effected for the printing of 250 tickets, and for the drawing up of a testimonial, which is to be engrossed on parchment, illuminated, &c. The price of each tickets is to be 12s 6d., and the banquet will take place on Tuesday next at 9 o'clock, at the Bank Hotel. It is thought that a great number will be present. The Prospecting Association met on the same (Thursday) evening at the Melbourne Hotel. There were present Messrs Jones (chairman), Neale Allen, Hennelly, Connolly, Savag', Hunter, and M'Parland. The Chairman remarked that they met on that evening for the purpose of discovering the best mode of forwarding the interests of the Association. Mr Hennelly suggested that three parties of prospectors, and four in each party be appointed, and that applications from experienced miners, be received as soon " as possible. Mr M'Parland would first funds to be collected.
After a long discussion in which many of the members joined, it was proposed and carried, that a subscription list be opened and that 100 copies be printed. On the motion of Mr Connolly, the name of Mr R. P. Bain was added to the Committee. Finally it was arranged that the members should exert themselves strenuously and speedily in the task of getting the necessary subscriptions, and accordingly Messrs Hennelly and Savage engaged to canvass the north side of the town, and Messrs Hunter and MParlaud the day followiug. It was also arranged that the canvass of the country parts,should be postponed till the result of the town canvass was ascertained, and so that a decent precedent for imitation may be established After a vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting adjourned till Monday evening.
