Brandy and potatoes are a shade easier. Archibald Bonar died yesterday (Eriday). At'the close of the Criminal business yesterday, His Honor, Judge Richmond, adjourned the Court till next Thursday, and in doing so, commented severely on the fact of lawyers in Hokitika being so negligent in the in conduct of their business. The adjournment was rendered necessary through the civil cases not being prepared for trial. His Honor stated that such conduct would not be tolerated in future, and that he would take steps to make the legal profession pay for their remissness. Mark Simon, charged with having attempted to commit suicide, was acquitted, and much surprise was expressed at the refusal of the Resident Magistrate, Mr Eitzgerald, to hear evidence as to the prisoner's state of mind, in the first instance.
