CHARLESTON NEWS.
The drawing for prizes in Mr Jewel's lottery took place on Thursday evening at the Melbourne Hotel. Mr J. Behan was the fortunate winner of the first prize, a gold watch by Dent of London. The usual weekly meeting of the Hospital was held on Thursday. The resignation of Mr Bain, as a member of Committee, was accepted with regret and the honorary secretary was requested to convey to that gentleman the thanks of the Committee for his past services. A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with tho Foley benefit was laid before the committee, whereby it appeared the gross takings amounted to £5-1 6s, and the nett receipts, after paying expenses, to .£36 3s.
The Visiting committee reported favorably of the condition of the hospital, in which there were five patients, and the doctor had resumed his duties. The outbuilding was approaching completion. On a proposition made by Mr M'Coy, one of the rules was amended in such a manner as to give annual subscribers of £l, the privilege of nominating a patient for admission into the hospital. Rather a novel property is to be raffled for here, in the shape of a poultry yard or hen ran eh e, as it is termed by its owner, Mr Vorley. The particulars will be found in another column. Mr Vorley has taken great trouble to get together a valuable stock, but it seems business calls him away to England, and he has therefore adopted the popular mode of realising its value.
The arrival of two large schooners on Thursday gave some animation to Constant Bay. They proved to be the Wild Wave from Lvttelton, ten days out, and the Excelsior from Dunedin, eight days out. There is no particular news from Richards' Terrace, the scene of the late rush. The prospectors have been engaged in bringing in a race of water, and will set in to work their ground in another day or two, but they are not very sanguine as to results. A small body of men continue on the ground, but not much work has been done yet.
