The Wallabi, Captain Daniels, lefb Wangarnii on Wednesday evening at six o'clock, and experienced fine weather during her run down to the Buller bar, at which she arrived on Thursday night at. 11.45, and came up to th» South Spit with Friday mornin<r's tide She brings some cattle and sheep, with a small genera] cargo of produce The Kennedy, Captain Whitwell, left the Grey on Thursday evening at half-past five, and arrived off the Builer bar at 12 o'clock She came ivp to the Government wharf at half-past six yesterday morning She reports that the IToki'ika bar is not workable
The ketch. Jane Elkin, which left Charleston about three weeks since, rather short of provisions, went ashore on Saturday last at Greymouth, while trying to enter the river She now lies on the north beach, bnt is not scrim ly injured An enquiry was held on Wednesday at the Custo-n House by Mr Andrews, acting collector, into the cause of the stranding of the Jane Elkin on the North Spit. Mr Andrews arrived at the following decision, —"The master saw the risk of taking the bar when no signal was flying, as on the one hand he had starvation to himself and crew, and on the other the chance of being able to get in in safety, and therefore chose the latter alternative; it appears there was not a pint of water remaining on board. The owners attach no blame to the master, nor to the harbormaster or signalman I presume therefore, he acted to the best of his judgment to save the lives of his crew The vessel therefore was lost by stranding in attempting to cross the Grey lliver bar at a dangerous time, to save himseif and crew from death by starvation and want of water
