CHARLESTON.
The recent rain has proved very welcome to the miners in this district who were beginning to suffer from the want of water. The sale by Mr Isaacs of Mr Lofty's small stock of stationery, &c, on Thursday, realised over £BO, the Irish Literary Society being the principal purchasers of books. At the last meeting of the Progress Committee, it was resolved to memorialise the Government to grant that a sittings of the District Court be periodically held in Charleston, and also pointing out the necessity of some addition being made to the present courthouse accommodation. It was also determined to communicate with the Postmaster-General on the subject of more frequent postal communication with "Westport. A subscription list to provide a fund for defraying general expenses, was begun by the members of the Committee, and the same was given into the charge of Messrs. Dwan, Russell, Isaacs and Bain.
Messrs Behan and Kelly, the present proprietors of the corner, best known as " Harry Mann's," are making extensive improvements in their property. The old. buildings being originally built three feet off the "road, advantage is being taken of the circumstance to erect an entirely new building outside the old one, without interfering with the current business. The new erection is lofty and spacious, and will be a handsome addition to the appearance of this, the best part of the town. Amongst other improvements in the immediate neighbourhood of the above, we may notice that the Melbourne Hotel has recently been completely refmished and redecorated, both inside and out by the proprietor, Mr Kennedy, who seems to have spared no expense to maintain the credit of this well known hostelry. A little way down the street we come to Messrs "Weitzell and Co's Hotel, the European the accommodation of which is again being extensively increased by the taking in of another building on the lower side, a store, lately in the occupation of Mr Taylor, which has been enlarged to more than double its former size, and a new front put in, so as to be uniform with the rest of the hotel. The additional space thus acquired will be divided into a second dining hall, and sleepiug apartments. In consequence of Mr Broad's absence at "Westport, on business connected with the District Court, no Courts were held on the usual days of Thursday and Friday, all cases standing over till Monday. The Foley Troupe have kindly promised their services in a benefit to be given in aid of the Hospital, on the evening of Tuesday next, in the Casino, the proprietors of which popular place of amusement have freely given to the Committee the use of their hall for the occasion. Considerable progress has been made in building the English Church, the shell being erected and the roofing nearly completed. The design is very plain, the object being to get as much accommodation as possible for the limited means at the command of the Committee. The Church will be finished in two or three weeks.
