CALEDONIAN.
(PROlt OXJR OWN COERESPO^BEXT.J) Another concert is about being given in the township for the benefit of one of the Amateurs, who has been unfortunate in his claim, owing to his mates having looked too carefully after the amalgam. Marshall and party's claim is fully maintaining its character, and that of Steele's, which adjoins it, is turning out very well and it is thought will be equally rich when they get in a little farther. At German Terrace a share in Stewart and party's claim was purchased by Mr David Barrie for £SO. Mr Jno. Walker was offered £IOO for a share in his claim, but declined it. Langrish and party who are putting in a tunnell south of the Arowaite are now m 300 feet. Patterson and party's water wheel has been erected, and it is ready to work. Mr David Barrie intends making extensive alterations in his premises on German Torrace. At Giles' Terrace, Davis and party, whose tunnel is next Evans and party, had to curve their tunnel in the direction of the beach, as they found that they were passing the run of gold ; in their course they have come on some very hard blocks of cement, impregnated in some cases with beach gravel. Luke and party have not as yet struck gold but are in a few hundred feet, and have every hope of being on washdirt at an early date. Nicholls and party, whose tunnel was to have been 1300 feet long, have had rather a remarkable stop put to their labors. At a distance of 470 feet they have come on a new run of gold altogether, and different in its formation from that discovered by Evans and party. It is fine gold and resembles iu its appearance the gold of the prospector's claim on the Caledonian Terrace. This run of gold is four or five feet over the boulders, and appears to be the original formation of beach wash. The wash dirt at first was one foot, but is now a foot and a-half in thickness, as to its description I shall at present say no more than that it is of a most productive nature, and it clearly shows ihat the gold producing qualities of this important district are at present only in a state of probation and that Giles Terrace will rank among the best in the Caledonian district. Back of Giles' Terrace, towards Deadman's several claims have been taken np, and a number of men engaged. We may expect to have a rush of business people to Giles' Terrace now as a good many were waiting to see how things would turn out here, and what class of •gold the other parties would come on. I think they now have ample
proof of tho richness of tbo Terrace, and that Bawyers will be busy oa Monday.
Messrs Brennan and Byre had a vory good ball on Friday evening which was numerously attended by a large circle of friends, and dancing continued to an early hour. The Caledonian track will be open for packers on Monday at both ends, and as tenders are asked for to keep it in repair, the sooner they are declared accepted the better for the public, as the party who contract for it had better make it for in its present condition, it is iu a most unfinished state.
