FOREIGN MEMORANDA.
The population of Guaeamata, Central America, is at present about 800,000 souls, of whom 500,000 are Indians, who can neither read or write. Thirteen members of the Charleston, South Carolina, Board of Aldermen, have been removed by General Canby, District Commander, and t?e!r places filled by his appointees, seven of whom are negroesFour acres of apparently deep soil ground in Hamilton, County Florida, recently sank to the depth of 50 feet,
the pit thus formed being gradually filled with watev.
A tremendous hailstorm in San Antonio, Texas, on the 10th May, damaged property to the value of half-a-million dollars, and killed several persons. The storm resembled a terrific battle, the lightning flashed m fearful vividness, the thunder crashing like a thousand cannon, and the hail falling like 3hot; so fearful was the noise that no one could hear unless fiey screamed in each other's ears. Never in the history of the city, never in the memory of the oldest inhabitant, was such a storm experienced. EarthquakeiuCalifornia.—Two heavy shocks of earthquake were felt in Sacramento City and vicinity at 9 o'clgclc on the 29th May. Four heavy shocks were felt at Fort Churchel and Virginia City, but no damage was done. At Virginia City several targe buldings were rocked and every body rushed out of doors, expecting a general demolition of things. The pumps in the " Savage " silvermine stopped and the miners supposed a cave had occurred.
MURDER OF OXE PoiiICEMAJf RY ANOTHER —Suicide of "yhe Murderer —Two Policemen, Saton and Cruickshanks—both Scotchmen—were shot at Sherburn, near Durham, on Friday, May Ist, under circumstances particularly sad. Paton had been reported to the Chief Constable for some alleged irregularities, and Cruickshanks had given information which led to Paton's discharge. While brooding over the discharge,Panton metCrickshanks, and invited him to accompany him to his house. Cruickshanks did so, and waited in front of a public-house, until Paton should return with some information he had spoken cf. When Panton did return, it was with a loaded revolver, which he presented at his companion ; and though the latter fled within the public house, Paton followed, and shot him dead. Then putting the muzzle of a charged barrel behind his left ear, he shot himself dead.
