PUBLIC LIBRARY.
To the 'Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston Argus. Sir,—ln perusing your yesterday's issue, I was very glad to see that an Athenaeum for Westport is likely to become a reality, but I was also sorry that the provisional committee, in their report, entirely omitted any reference to distant subscribers. I have no doubt that many men living at a distance from Westport would be glad to avail themselves of a really good library, and of the reading-room, &c, whenever they may chance to be in town- It is a great pity that such like institutions are not more common amongst the pioneers of civilization, and that lectures, readings, and other intellectual entertainments are not more encouraged by our Government and leading men, to oppose the evil effects of the everlasting gin palace, casino, card table, and billiard saloon. But this is a theme for the minister, the journalist, and the true statesman. I hope that the present committee will take a wider view than their predecessors, of the good that may be done by such an institution, and give the thousands an opportunity of improving their minds, as well as the hundreds of Westport. By inserting the above you will oblige, Tours, &c, Pro Bono Publico. Caledonian, July 23,1868.
