ELECTION OF HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.
According to notice the election of a Permanent Hospital Committee came •off on Saturday, polls being taken at Westpbrt, Addison's and the Caledonian, all subscribers of 10s being permitted to vote. Out of six candidates from the late Provisional Committee, three have been elected and three"have failed but thoy have the great satisfaction of knowing that to their energy and unsparing industry the present very satisfactory position of hospital affairs is duo, and the public have every right to recognise, as far as possible, the very valuable services they have rendered. The new Committee will begin with nearly £SOO subscribed money to which the Government will as Mr Kynnerslcy promised add twice theamount, and such a sum properly expended will be a blessing to many a poor sufferer in the district. Only one member from the outlying districts is returned, viz, MrE. M'-Farlane, of the Caledonian; Addison's failing to send in any local representative. Mr Smyth however, may almost be said to bo aii Addison's man, for his chief business lies in that district and the people there may very safely leave their interests in his hands. Dr Giles, we are glad to say, very properly takes the premier place on the list, and from his professional knowledge, as well as in other respects, will prove a very valuable accession to the Committee. Mr Harris too, clerk of the Bench, is one of the chosen, and will also, we arc sure, prove an "excellent member. The remainder of the elected with the one exception, referred to above, are all in business, professionally or otherwise, in Westport, and contain all the elements of a practical working body. The election at'all the throe places passed oil' without the least unpleasantness, and very little excitement. A great many availed themselves of the condition which gave them a vote on payment of 10s, and we expect a tolerably large addition will be made to the funds in eonsequence. We subjoin the returns from the three places as well as a total, so that those curious can see in whose favor votes were recorded at each place. An official declaration of the poll will" be made to-day as will be seen by advertisement, and the elected Committee no doubt will make arrangements for holding their first meeting.

MEETHSTG!: OP THE HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.
The first meeting of'the now Hospital Committee was lieldjori Monday at the Commissioner's office, when there were present, Mr Commissioner Kynnersley (Chairman), Messrs Harris, Muiison, Smyth, Powell, Field, Dr Cottercll, Messrs M'Farland, Munro.. O'Conor, Bailie, Tyler.
The first busiuess was the election o' officers, the first appointment considered being that of secretary. Messr.M'Parland, Harris and Munro wen successively nominated. Mr M'Far land declined, Mr Harris could noi guarantee attendance at every meeting but eventually Mr Munro agreed to act if elected, A long discussion next ensued as to the manner of voting, Mr O'Conor moving and Dr Cotetrerell seconding a resolution that it should bo by ballot.
Mr Tyler moved and Mr Munro seconded an amendment that all voting bo open, by show of hands or by the voices.
The original resolution —" That all voting of the committee should be by ballot," was carried by eight to four.
Ml- Powell moved, and Mr Smyth seconded —" That Mr John Munro be requested to act as secretary to the committee. Carried.
Mr Tyler proposed, and. Mr Powell seconded—" That Mr P. Harris be requested to act as treasurer to the committee." Carried unanimously. Mr Tyler moved—" That a subcommittee be selected to draw; up a code of rules for the conduct and management of the committee and other things. The committee to consist of Drs. Giles, Cotterell, Messrs Harris, O'Conor, Munro, and the mover, and to report as soon as convenient to the general committee." Mr Bailie seconded. Carried unanimously.
Mr Tyler suggested that sub-com-mittees should be appointed in the outlying districts, and he proposed—- " That the sub-committee just appointed should embody rules for that purpose in their report to be brought before the general committee." Mr O'Conor seconded this motion, which was carried unanimously. In a conversation which ensued, the chairman stated that though the G-ov-ernment would give £2 to every £l, they would only do so on the net proceeds handed over by the provisional Committee. With reference to a paid secretary, such had been the practice at Charleston, but the Grovernment strongly disapproved of it, and they would not give £2 to £1 subscribed, on a secretary's salary.
In reference to the affairs of the provisional Committee the secretary and treasurer of this Committee were requested to confer with them, receive their report, take a transfer of the funds collected, and report to the next meeting.
Mr Tyler suggested as the reserve laid out for the hospital had heen found to be unsuitable, that the chairman be requested to use his influence on his approaching visit to Nelson, to secure a section where the present hospital now stands. Mr O'Conor opposed tins course, but would rather that all the available sites be ascertained before any opinion was given positively in favor of any one, and he particularly objected to this site on a variety- of grounds. The chairman explained what sites were available for an hospital and pointed them out on the plan. A conversation on "this subject ensued which resulted in the matter being, held over till Mr Kyunersley's return from Nelson.
Mr Harris thought that it was very necessary that a bank should be appointed. Mr Smyth moved, and Mr Munson seconded that it be the Bank of New South Wales.
Mr O'Conor proposed and Dr Cotterell seconded that the Bank of New Zealand be selected.
Mr Munro proposed and Mr Harris seconded that all three banks be ballotted for. This was agreed to and the result was as follows. Bank of New Zealand 7 votes
Bank of New South Wales 4 „ Union Bank - 1 „ The first mentioned Bank was therefore declared to be chosen.
Mr Tyler moved that Messrs M'lntosh, Bentley, and the Rev. C. L. M'Lean, be appointed a sub-committee in Nelson, aud that the secretary advise them of the same and request them to act.
Mr Powell seconded the resolution, which was carried.
On the motion of M r O'Conor seconded byDr Cotterell, the present appointments of surgeon and warder were formally ratified.
Mr Munson proposed that the meeting be adjourned till Wednesday afternoon next at four o'clock. Mr O'Conor seconded the'motion.
Mr Powell moved, and Mr Tyler seconded an amendment, that the meeting adjourn till next Monday evening at half-past seven o'clock. A quorum was fixed at fis r e meinbors.
The amendment was carried, after which a vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
