The weights for the Melbourne Cup have been disclqsed. The top weight is lOst 41b—for Sydney Tim Whiffler and the Barb.
The news from Queensland is very encouraging; new and rich reefs are discovered daily. The Art Union distribution of the Varcoville stud has been stopped by the Government of New South Wales. A severe shock of an earthquake was recently felt at Maitland, N.S.W. The Albion, s.s., arrived at the Eijis on May 22! The agents of the Melbourne Company have concluded arrangements with King Thakombau. Ex Judge Boothby died at Adelaide on May 22. His funeral was largely attended.
A man named James "Wilson, a hawker, attempted to murder Mr Kinsella, inspector of the Eastern Melbourne Market, by discharging a pistol within a yard of his head. Mr Kinsella escaped with a severe face wound, and the ruffian was promptly secured.
The jury have returned a verdict of " Not Guilty " in the case of Shires, charged with the murder of Mr Drummond by snake experimenting. Several petitions, asking the Assembly to pass supplies, have been presented but not received, as they were contrary to Standing Orlers. Mr M'Culloeh's motion—to include the Darling grant in the Appropriation Act—was the only subject debated.- Mr "-Fellows' amendment—to include the grant in a separate bill—was feebly supported. Mr M'Culloeh's motion was carried by a large majority. Mr Francis suggested that the Darling grant should be included in the Supply Bill. Messrs M'Gregor and Duffy supported this proposition, which was rejected by the Ministry. The Opposition intended to take steps to ask the Government to recommend the grant. The marriage of Miss Manners Sutton to Mr C.E. Bright was celebrated this morning (June 25) at Toorak Church, by the Bishop of Melbourne, assisted by the Bev. Mr Sandys. The ceremony passed off with great eclat. There were ten bridesmaids, and the church was crowded. Sydney, June 24. The Customs authorities have seized £3OOO worth of goods imported by a leadingfirm, because they were invoiced below their real value. The seizure has caused great excitement. A testimonial worth £4OO was presented to Mr Vial, on June 22, by the Premier, as a ' memento of Mr Vial's courage in securing O'Farrell.
