CALEDONIAN.
(FROM OTJB OWN COBBESPONDENT). Squires and party sunk a shaft 175 feet, and came on a good run of gold, when they found it necessary to put in a tunnel to work the lead they are now four months working and are in 800 feet, but have not as yet reached thelead. Hunter and party are working on, the deep lead about five months, they are in 500 feet, and are making about £l2 a week. Stewart and party, have put in a tunnel 600 feet, and have three feet of very rich wash dirt. They have about 13 or 14ozs. of amalgam on their plates, after each days washing, and their dirt is certainly some of the richest on the Caledonian. Hudson and party, of Ballarat Terrace, have made a tunnel of 100 feefc on the face of the terrace. They have eight feet of rich wash dirt, and are making from £2O to £3O a week.
In German Creek, some parties are engaged washing tailings, and are doing well. M'G-overn and party, are making £8 a week washing in this creek.
At German Terrace, Bastard and party, are in 600 feet, with their tuuel, but will have to go some distance farther before they reach the lead.
TJogue and party, have for some time been malting good wages. Their claim will soon be worked out, when they purpose putting in a tunnel south of the Arowaite, where Langrish and party, are working, and have had a very good prospect. Patterson and party, have a wheel up, and a crushing machine in course of construction, for the purpose of crushing the tailings in their claim, there is twelve months work in this claim yet, and it has been for some time paying £lO a week, it is the prospectors claim, and a share is for
sale in it at present in consequence of one party leaving. At Giles Terrace, Patterson and party, have taken up ground, in front of the prospectors, they are at present occupied in procuring water, and have had a prospect of 4 grains to the shovel.
Evans and party, are also engaged (■getting water but will not wash for some time yet. Davis and party, are next to the prospectors' claim and have put in a tunnel of 200 feet during the past fourteen days, have no slabbing, which will account for their progress in such a s-hort time. They have 70 feet more to go in, before they will reach the lead and -their tunnel is three feet deeper tlhan that, of the prospectors. A good many are waiting about this terrace, to see what kind of gold Davis and party will come on, and should it prove equal to the prospectors, a large rush may be expect there. Luke and party, are above Davis ;and party, and have to go in 500 feet. They are ten feet deeper than the prospectors. Hume and party, have to go in 800 feet and are 20 feet lower than the prospectors. Perry and party, who are in the fifth claim have to go in 1300 feet, -and are thirty three feet lower than the prospectors. There are six claims being worked, on this terrace, but only one has as yet struck gold, which is the prospectors, although a very enticing prospect has been obtained. There are two stores on the tep of the terrace, also a butchers shop, besides buildings being erected, and in a few weeks one may expect a small township her as all hands appear sanguine as to the richness of the ground. Simons and party, who are the prospectors of this terrace have their tunnel an 110 feet, and are expecting to strike the wash dirt every hour, their progress has been slow in consequence of the rocks they had to go through, but they hope to be rewardad by the dirt. They were two months prospecting about their present ground before they obtained the splendid prospect, they had of five grains to the shovel. Thompson and party, (8 from Charleston) are putting in a tunnel, which is to be 300 feet, but they are only a few days at work. M'Farlane and party, are below Simons and party, and had to abandon their first tnnnel in consequence of the rocks. They are now in 40 feet in a tunnel, and hope to strike gold shortly. The progress in all this ground is very slow, the rocks taking a, considerable time to get through, when met in a tunnel which is in about 40 or 50 feet.
Two miles further up there are a party of 9 or 10 from Brighton at wrork, and at one side all the available ground is taken up, so that parties coming will have to take the top or face of the hill, between here and Giles Terrace. Men from other diggings are coming every day, and we may expect a large population on the Caledonian, and along to Deadman's in a little time.
On Saturday evening last the 4th inst., being the anniversary of American independance. Mr William Bogue, an American by birth, entertained all the residents on German Terrace, at a supper in the evening, in Mr Barrie's iron store, in commemoration of the event, and his numerous •guests, enjoyed themselves to a late hour.
A few of the German Terrace men intend giving a supper to Mr Bogue next Saturday evening, at the same place.
