THE PATEA.
The following is taken from the Taranaki Herald of the 20th inst., and gives some particulars of further outrages by the Hau Haus, in the Patea district:—
Yesterday Mr Messenger, who had just arrived from Oeo, called upon us and kindly gave us some further information respecting the doings of the rebel natives. He was told by Tutakai, who left Waihi last Monday, that the natives were burning all the whares about the Waingongoro redoubt, and were shooting the cattle wherever they saw them. The pigs, however, they were driving away for their own use. Mr Smith (formerly of the White Hart Hotel) who kept the hotel had a narrow escape, having only time to remove his furniture to Waihi, when the rebels set fire to his house and burnt it to
the ground. Mr and Mrs Smith are safe at Waihi. Captain McDonnell's house, which was not far from Mr Smith's inu, has also suffered the same fate, and been rased to the ground by the natives. When Mr Smith's house was observed to be on fire, the troopers turned out and went in pursuit of the rebels, but on the natives observing them they quickly dispersed. Mr Messenger tells us, likewise, that Mr Richmond Hursthouse and Mr Haig have gone through to Patea, and are safe. The friendly natives converse day and night about the murders, and seem very much annoyed at a fresh outbreak taking place.
