The Nelson arrived from Wanganui yesterday, and will leave for the south this morning.

The John Penn has at last found a foeman more worthy of her steel in the smart little paddle steamer, Charles Edward. The two had a neck and neck race from Hokitika to Greymouth, in which we believe the Penn claimed the honors. The latter left Greymouth first, but Captain Palmer claims to have overhauled her. They started on the longer trip to Nelson yesterday morning, the Charles Edward getting away a little.first. A capital race may be expected, but the paddle boat has fifty tons of coal, whilst the Penn is only in ballast trim. Whether this will affect the former's speed we cannot say, but we should think it would materially lessen her chances.
