Neably the whole of the Estimates for the West Coast are now passed, and they have undergone little alteration from the original form on being submitted to the Council. We extract the following from the Evening Mail of Saturday week: — " On the consideration of the Estimates for the Commissioner's Department on the South-West Groldfields, a long discussion ensued on the salary of the Commissioner and Resident Magistrate, which was eventually passed at £7OO, Mr GKbbs's amendment that it be reduced to £6OO, being rejected by 14 to 11. The salaries of three Wardens and Resident Magistrates were passed in globo at £ISOO ; whilst that of the Warden at Charleston was raised, on Mr Home's amendment, from £3OO to £4OO. The salary of the G-oldfields Accountant and Clerk to the Bench was passed at £350. Mr Donne's amendment to reduce the number of clerks from six to five, was lost on division by 13 to 4, and the original item, six clerks at £1625, passed. Occasional clerical assistance, £l5O, and four bailiffs at £BOO were both passed. The consideration of the three items —overseer of works, £3OO, two foremen of works, £SOO, and stationery, printing, advertising and contingencies, £1225 was postponed. In the Police Department, the salary of the Inspector was reduced, on the amendment of the Provincial Secretary, from £350 to £3OO, the office of inspector of Weights and Measures not as yet being included amongst the duties of this officer, as intended. The following items in this department were passed without discussion : Four sergeants, at 14s 6d per day, £1,058 10s.; two detectives, £511; two senior constables, at 13s 6d per day, £492 155. ; five mounted constables, at 135.. £1,186 55.; two senior constables at 135., £474 10s.; eight first-class constables, at 12s 6d., £IBO9 ; six second-class constables, at lis 6d., £1247 ss. ; accoutrements and travelling expenses, £1000; forage and saddlery, £600; contingencies, £270 15s. G-aols : —Gaoler at Westport, £275 ; senior warder at 12s 6d., £226 2s 6d. ; warder at Jlls 6d., £207 15s 6d.; rations for prisoners, £912 10s. ; gaoler at Charleston, at 12s 6d, £226 2s 6d. ; rations for prisoners, £474 10s.; gaoler at Brighton at 12s Gd., £226 2s 6d. ; rations for prisoners, £296 lis 3d. ; rations for prisoners at Cobden, £llß 1256 d.; blankets, tools and clothing, £33 6 lis 3d; maintenance of prisoners at Hokitika, £300; conveyance of prisoners and lunatics, £IOO ; witnesses on criminal cases, £2OO ; the vote for the revision of Mining Regulations

" Hospitals.—At Westport, £1200; at the Grey, £1500; at Charleston, £900; and the vote for the Brighton Hospital was increased, on the amendment of Mr Home, from £6OO to £7ll 10s. The item Charitable Aid, £3OO, having been passed, the House resumed.
