CHARLESTON NEWS.
At the usual weekly meeting of the Hospital Committee on Friday evening, the accounts for the past month were examined and passed. The tender of M'Parland and Co. for the supply of bread up to 31st July, was accepted. Applications were received from the following persons, for the vacant situation of warder : —Andrew Corrigan, William Quinlan, R. B. Stewart, Henry Dixon, J. A. Eichardson, John Kitchen, Joseph Lowrie, James Burke, Michael Burke. After an examination of testimonials and considerable discussion, the list was worked down to the following three : B. B. Stewart (the late warder), J. A. Eichardson, and Michael Burke, and two of these not being in attendance, a decision was deferred to next morning. A special meeting was accordingly held the following morning at ten o'clock, at which time the three candidates were in attendance. Election was then made of Mr J. A. Richardson. We understand the presentation to our worthy harbor-master, Captain Beveridge, of the Royal Humane Society's medal, is arranged to lake place in the Casino, on Tuesday evening at seven o'clock. The medal will be presented through Mr C. Broad, E.M. While noticing the improvements in Princes street, which have been effected during the last week or two, under Mr Pell's superintendence, we must call i attention to the neglected state of that portion of Camp street extending from the Camp Reserve towards the Buller road. With the exception of a very narrow roadway, the whole width of the street retains its primitive condition of bog intersected by numerous open drains and water races, and altogether presents an appearance of neglect discreditable to its position as the principal entrance to the town. The owners of the races would, if called upon, be bound to cover in their property, and the application of a few loads of gravel from a neighboring gravel pit would serve to make this important thoroughfare an increased benefit, instead of the eyesore it is at present. We willingly give publicity to tho following letter received by Mr Bain
from Mr Dutton, in reply to one recently sent: — " Cobden, 2nd June, 1868. "My Deab Sib, —I have to-'lay received your kind letter of the 27th ult., and the chaste little inkstand which my good friends at Charleston desire me to accept as a substantial addition to the very gratifying address presented to me on my departure from Charleston, some four months ago. I can only reiterate what I stated publicly on that occasion—that this act of kindness on the part of my Charleston friends was, by me, wholly unexpected, and that I can never look upon the success which they are pleased to state attended my labors amongst them, as anything more than the result of an effort on my part conscientiously to discharge the important duties entrusted to me —an effort it was my positive duty make. I assure you my reminiscences of Charleston and the many kindnesses received from its inhabitants are too pleasing to require the occasional reminder I speak of, but I accept with many and sincere thanks the testimonial as an evidence, not only that the inhabitants of Charleston approved of the manner in which the duties of my office were discharged, but that I was enabled to secure the esteem and respect of bo many of those amongst whom I was located; and this testimonial is all the more welcome from the fact that its intrinsic ralue has, in accordance with my wish, been kept as low as possible, consistent with the fact that so many were, as you assure me, anxious to become contributors. " May I request you to make known to those contributors how much I am pleased with their giftj that I Btill take a lively interest m my old district, and that, in all sincerity, I wish it and its many inhabitants true and lasting •prosperity. " Believe me, my dear Sir, " Very faithfully yours, " J. Eogee Dutton." " A. B. Bain, Esq., Charleston.
